Late event-related potentials and psychopathology.

چکیده
Event-related potentials include not only the short duration evoked potentials (EPs) associated with sensory stimulation or motor response but also longer duration potentials such as the contingent negative variation, for which the eliciting events are more complex. For EPs there seems to be a relationship between the latency of the EP component and the degree of influence by more cognitive psychological variables such as attention. In general, the "early" sensory EP components occurring before 50 msec are least sensitive to these variables, components between 50 and 200 msec are affected to an intermediate extent, and the components after 200 msec are the most susceptible to psychological influence. Conversely, the earlier components are most dependent on stimulus modality and other physical parameters of the stimuli. Although early EP components might be better for reflecting the more enduring features of psychiatric disorders—a biological substrate for schizophrenia, for example—since they are less influenced by fluctuations in mental state, it is important to realize that psychiatric disorders are not known to alter sensation in its primary aspects. If there are characteristic psychological manifestations of these disorders, these manifestations would be more likely to influence the later components of the EP or other event-related potentials. Both sides of this argument are represented in psychopathology and event-related potential research today: Some investigators study the early EP components in hopes of finding a central biological deficit in schizo-

Native-like Event-related Potentials in Processing the Second Language Syntax: Late Bilinguals
Background: The P600 brain wave reflects syntactic processes in response to different first language (L1) syntactic violations, syntactic repair, structural reanalysis, and specific semantic components. Unlike semantic processing, aspects of the second language (L2) syntactic processing differ from the L1, particularly at lower levels of proficiency. At higher L2 proficiency, syntactic violatio...
متن کاملEvent-Related Potentials of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing of Emotional Faces
Introduction: Emotional stimulus is processed automatically in a bottom-up way or can be processed voluntarily in a top-down way. Imaging studies have indicated that bottom-up and top-down processing are mediated through different neural systems. However, temporal differentiation of top-down versus bottom-up processing of facial emotional expressions has remained to be clarified. The present st...
متن کاملThe Increased Sex Differences in Susceptibility to Emotional Stimuli during Adolescence: An Event-Related Potential Study
The present study investigated how pubertal development and sex interact to influence humans' emotion susceptibility during adolescence. Event-related potentials were recorded for highly emotional, mildly emotional and neutral stimuli in positive and negative blocks, when 73 adolescents (36 pre-/early pubertal students, 19 boys, 10-12 years old; 37 mid-/late pubertal students, 18 boys, 11-13 ye...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Neurofeedback on the Event-Related Potentials in Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of neurofeedback therapy on event-related potential (EPR) at both behavioral and physiological level in children (7-12 years) with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Methods: The current study is a quasi-experimental project whit pre-test and post-test control group. In this study, the subjects (12 patients ...
متن کاملBrain and personality bases of insensitivity to infant cues in neglectful mothers: an event-related potential study.
This investigation examined the neural and personality correlates of processing infant facial expressions in mothers with substantiated neglect of a child under 5 years old. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 14 neglectful and 14 control mothers as they viewed and categorized pictures of infant cries, laughs, and neutral faces. Maternal self-reports of anhedonia and empathy were...
